The Year the Swallows Came Early $5.99 Eleanor “Groovy” Robinson loves cooking and plans to go to culinary school just as soon as she’s old enough. But even Groovy’s thoughtfully—planned menus won’t fix the things that start to go wrong the year she turns eleven—suddenly, her father is in jail, her best friend’s long-absent mother reappears, and the swallows that make their annual migration to her hometown arrive surprisingly early. As Groovy begins to expect the unexpected, she learns about the importance of forgiveness, understands the complex stories of the people around her, and realizes that even an earthquake can’t get in the way of a family that needs to come together. Kathryn Fitzmaurice’s lovely debut novel is distinctively Californian in its flavor. Her rich characters and strong sense of place feel both familiar and fresh at first meeting—and worth revisiting, again and again. |

They Never Came Back $7.99 In a busy school cafeteria, a teenage girl is confronted by a classmate who questions her identity. He explains to the students who have crowded around that the girl bears an uncanny resemblance to his cousin, who was taken away by social services five years ago. Her parents abandoned her, fleeing the country after being accused of embezzling millions of dollars. The students are intrigued, but the girl shrugs off the attention as a case of mistaken identity. As the days pass, however, the boy refuses to relent and even brings his parents in to back him up. But they are not the only adults involved. An FBI agent who has been working the case these past five years believes that whoever this girl is, she can serve as bait to help the FBI capture the fugitives. In this powerful novel that explores the possibility of mistaken identity, the evils of money and greed, and the heartfelt obligations of family and loyalty, Caroline B. Cooney has once again crafted a page-turner that will resonate with readers. From the Hardcover edition. |

And Along Came Boas $180 The advent of Franz Boas on the North American scene irrevocably redirected the course of Americanist anthropology. This volume documents the revolutionary character of the theoretical and methodological standpoint introduced by Boas and his first generation of students, among whom linguist Edward Sapir was among the most distinguished. Virtually all of the classic Boasians were at least part-time linguists alongside their ethnological work. During the crucial transitional period beginning with the founding of the Bureau of American Ethnology in 1879, there were as many continuities as discontinuities between the work of Boas and that of John Wesley Powell and his Bureau. Boas shared with Powell a commitment to the study of aboriginal languages, to a symbolic definition of culture, to ethnography based on texts, to historical reconstruction on linguistic grounds, and to mapping the linguistic and cultural diversity of native North America. The obstacle to Boas’s vision of anthropology was not the Bureau but the archaeological and museum establishment centred in Washington, D.C. and in Boston. Moreover, the scientific revolution was concluded not when Boas began to teach at Columbia University in New York in 1897 but around 1920 when first generation Boasians cominated the discipline in institutional as well as theoretical terms. The impact of Boas is explored in terms of theoretical positions, interactional networks of scholars, and institutions within which anthropological work was carried out. The volume shows how collaboration of universities and museums gradually gave way to an academic centre for anthropology in North America, in line with the professionalization of American science along German lines during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The author is Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Centre for Research and Teaching of Canadian Native Languages at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. |

When Zachary Beaver Came to Town $6.99 The red words painted on the trailer caused quite a buzz around town and before an hour was up, half of Antler was standing in line with two dollars clutched in hand to see the fattest boy in the world. Toby Wilson is having the toughest summer of his life. It’s the summer his mother leaves for good; the summer his best friend’s brother returns from Vietnam in a coffin. And the summer that Zachary Beaver, the fattest boy in the world, arrives in their sleepy Texas town. While it’s a summer filled with heartache of every kind, it’s also a summer of new friendships gained and old friendships renewed. And it’s Zachary Beaver who turns the town of Antler upside down and leaves everyone, especially Toby, changed forever. With understated elegance, Kimberly Willis Holt tells a compelling coming-of-age story about a thirteen-year-old boy struggling to find himself in an imperfect world. At turns passionate and humorous, this extraordinary novel deals sensitively and candidly with obesity, war, and the true power of friendship.   When Zachary Beaver Came to Town is the winner of the 1999 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature. |

This Time Around $14.99 A country star who hails from Canada, Paul Brandt presents some affecting material on this 2004 album.Paul Brandt left Reprise after his 1999 album That’s the Truth, and he spent the next five years in the wilderness. He signed with BMG Canada and released two albums — 2000′s What I Want to Be Remembered For and 2001′s live Small Towns and Big Dreams — before he managed to get another contract in the States. He finally resurfaced on Orange, a subsidiary of Universal, in the fall of 2004, and with the new label came an opportunity to redefine himself and reinvigorate his career, and he seized it, writing or co-writing every song on the album apart from the opening cover of “Convoy,” which all too faithfully mimics C.W. McCall’s original. While it’s entertaining, it starts the album on an awkward foot, but things straighten out quickly with “Leavin’,” an arena rock-influenced ballad whose echoed guitars echo U2 quite heavily. This is a brooding, intense number that finds Brandt stretching himself and succeeding, and while more of the album could have benefited from going as dark as this, he takes other risks on the record, such as the swaggering, vaudevillian “The King” and assured, anthemic title track. These songs are sly fusions of contemporary country and ’80s modern rock, and show that Brandt is developing a distinctive voice. Unfortunately, the rest of the album isn’t quite as adventurous, as it’s devoted nearly entirely to ballads. Many of these ballads happen to be fairly good, but they tend to sound a little samey, and would have sounded better if there weren’t quite as many on the record. Even if there are a few too many ballads, This Time Around is still a successful return to the spotlight for Brandt, and one that points him in the right direction. Hopefully, he’ll follow this path even further next time around. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine |

Night Evelyn Came Out Of Grave - $5.99 Spaghetti Western veteran Antonio De Teffe (aka Anthony Steffen) stars in this delightfully tacky supernatural giallo from Italian filmmaker Emilio P. Miraglia. De Teffe plays Alan Cunningham, a titled nobleman who has just been released from a mental institution after a breakdown brought about by the death of his beautiful red-haired wife, Evelyn. Alan isn’t quite right, and despite loads of helpful advice from his doctor and money-hungry cousin, can’t stop picking up red-haired women and dragging them back to his castle dungeon, where his desire to punish his late wife’s infidelity leads to some hallucinatory S & M murders. Eventually he meets the beautiful Gladys (Marina Malfatti) and quickly marries her, generating a good deal of anger among his greedy relatives. That’s when members of his family start disappearing and the obligatory inheritance plot tightens around the deranged lord, raising the question of whether Evelyn is really dead after all. Miraglia directs with a somewhat plodding style atypical for the normally lively genre, but the film’s cheese value is enhanced by a wonderfully schizophrenic score by Bruno Nicolai; an amusingly dotty production design; and enough sex, kinkiness, and violence to satisfy any giallo fan. Erika Blanc (aka Enrica Bianchi Colombatto) makes an impression as one of the strippers Alan brings to his dungeon, Alan’s dead aunt (Joan C. Davies) is devoured by a cageful of hungry foxes, and the cast also includes familiar genre faces Umberto Raho and Giacomo Rossi-Stuart. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi |
