Adam’s Peak- a Test of Devotion!
In sharp contrast to the weather patterns found elsewhere in the country, the Hill Country of Sri Lanka is where you will find mild weather throughout most of the year. One of the most frequented religious sites in the country, Sri Pada or Adam’s Peak is, according to Buddhist beliefs, the place where an impression of Buddha’s foot has been created on the surface of a rock. While those who follow the religious teachings of Islam and Catholicism believe the foot print is that of Adam (the first man to be created by God) Hindu followers believe that it belongs to God Shiva. The mountain itself where the foot print lies is called Samanalakande which means ‘butterfly mountain’. Whichever school of thought to one may defer, Sri Pada has been a venue of pilgrimage for over a thousand years.
As the pilgrimage season begins on the full moon day in the month of December, it reaches its climax during the months of January and February. The route to the top of the mountain is quite crowded at this time of the year and the climb itself is a challenging one, as the steps leading to the summit are steep. However, devoted pilgrims make the journey with no complaints as they consider the challenge of the climb a test of faith and devotion.
