Something I Said- The Funk Fusion Of Yohannes Tona, Jazz-Tinged Ballads Of Alicia Wiley
Something I Said
Yohannes Tona, Alicia Wiley
Dwight Hobbes Insight News Sitting in at Sol Testimony’s Soul Sounds Open Mic & Jam Session over the summer proved to be profoundly informative for this arts columnist. It introduced me to bad-to-bone bassist Yohannes Tona and reacquainted me with sterling pianist-songsmith-vocalist Alicia Wiley. Sol Testimony’s Soul Sounds Open Mic & Jam Session is gone. But, Tona and Wiley have exquisite albums available for your listening pleasure. Yohannes Tona’s debut Sand from the desert, is funk fusion sweetened to taste. You’ve got ten originals, including Tona composing with Mint Condition‘s Stokley and Twin Cities stage star Aimee K. Bryant, plus John Coltrane‘s “Naima” and Miles Davis‘ “So What”. Also, there’s Stokley, F. Darnell Davis of Darnell Davis and The Remnant, Bryant, spoken wordsmith Sha Cage and noted keyboardist Nachito Herrera. In short, it’s a packed house of monster talent. “I feel blessed”, says Tona, “that I have a good relationship with all these great artists who collaborated on the album for Nothing But love. If all artists were Like That, we would hear many more success stories.” He had more folk in mind to invite to do the album, but ” didn’t get to call out because of time. Friends like Wendell Henry, Sol Testimony and Alicia Wiley.” At the core of Sand from the desert Yohannes Tona Band. That’s Tona, Peter Vircks(sax), Brian Ziemniak (keys) and Brian Kendrick (drums). They did a release event at The Dakota Nov. 1 and it was a solid success. The crowd, including R&B siren Erica West, had a ball. Davis sat in on keys, Bryant sang, John Raymond played trumpet – in general, one of those nights you Talk About for weeks. Next up for Tona is some serious woodshedding. “My wish is to develop the kind of discipline that the old classical and jazz musicians had to dig dip into music and come up with some thing new. God help me with that because it is much harder These Days where there is too many things pulling you Away From that path.” Alicia Wiley’s third outing, Changes, is a tight set recorded live at The Phipps Theater. With Tona, Peter Vircks, Andres Prado on guitar and Kevin Washington alternating Brandon Commodore on drums. Tona says of doing this album with her, “We are Very Good friends, so its always fun working with her. I believe she’s got what the industry is looking for. I hope she will be heard.” From his lips to God’s ears. Wiley, at only 25, has fascinating command of her craft. And a wry, wizened air that intrigues. The More Music lovers who find out about an artist this strong the better. Her edgy, jazz-tinged chops, Wiley acknowledges, Come From a rich and varied source. “I am a music junkie. I am constantly listening and I’m sure that has helped shape my style into what it is today. To me, a great song is a great song. I love all styles.” She is, of course, as glad to have had Tona on board for Changes as he was to be there. “I consider myself very lucky to have had Yohannes on my latest CD. He can throw down. He has amazing musical instincts, creativity, chops, and lays down the most soulful ideas You Will ever hear. There isn’t a thing missing from his playing.” Which is why Tona will be on her next album (in whirlwind fashion, with the new release Less Than a month old, Wiley is working at Pachyderm Studio on the next one). She made Changes a live recording because, “this Time Around I wanted to capture the energy and spontaneity of a live show. It is almost impossible to match the same energy level in a studio setting.” You’ll agree she got what she was going for.

3 Traps That Cause CIOs To Make Bad Decisions
How do You Make decisions? We’d all like to think that we carefully weight the available evidence and then use our past experiences to make the right decision each time. However, the reality is actually quite different.
As CIOs we are asked to make some very big “bet the company” types of decisions. If we don’t know why we sometimes make bad decisions, it may cause us to hesitate and wait Too Long before making a decision.
It turns out that there are 3 different reasons why a CIO can end up making a bad decision. We’re going to take a look at each of these hidden decision making traps and show you how to identify them and, even more importantly, how to avoid them…
The Anchoring Trap
John Hammond is a researcher who has looking into why CIOs make bad decisions. His research has revealed that CIOs (along with other decision makers) struggle to make complex decisions.
We’ve developed ways of coping with making the “big” decisions. We use What Are called heuristics which are basically little unconscious routines to reach a decision. Normally this works just fine. However, it’s when they don’t work that we run into troubles.
Is the population of the United States greater than 100 million? What is the population of the United States? It turns out that if I had asked you if the population of the United States was 50M in my first question, most of you would have guessed a much lower number in answer to my second question.
The reason that we do this is the same reason that CIOs can make bad decisions: we give way Too Much weight to the first information that we receive on a topic that we’re going to have to make a decision on. We say that this first blast of information “anchors” our following thoughts on the subject and clouds our judgment.
CIOs can deal with this problem by taking the time to try to view each decision that they have to make from multiple perspectives. Also remain open minded – see the thoughts of others in your organization who may be better positioned to view this issue from a different angle.
The Status-Quo Trap
Let’s all face it: we like things the way that they are. When it comes to making decisions this bias does not go away.
When we have to make a decision, we prefer to choose those options that will keep things pretty much the way that they are as opposed to introducing radical change.
The researchers who have looked into why we fall into the status-quo trap report that this is a deeply engrained part of who we are. We are actively looking for ways to shield our ego from anything that could result in damage to the way that we see ourselves.
In order to overcome this decision making trap, while making a decision CIOs need to remind themselves about what their goals are: what do they really want to accomplish. Sticking with the Status Quo might be the right way to go, or maybe it isn’t.
Make sure That You don’t allow yourself to be fooled by What You might think your switching costs are. It’s never easy to move from the status quo to Something Else, but it might not be as hard as You Are imagining it to be.
The Sunk-Cost Trap
A sunk cost is something that we’ve spent either time or money (or both) on in the past that we can never hope to Get Back. The problem that CIOs run into is that once the cost has been realized, it can cloud our future decision making.
Specifically, once we’ve committed ourselves to investing in a project or an employee, we find it much easier to continue to invest in them as opposed to cutting off the flow of funds and / or time.
The reason that we make this kind of mistake is very simple: we don’t want to admit that we made a mistake in the past. By admitting that we made a mistake, we will be publically opening ourselves up to criticism and nobody wants to do that.
In order to avoid Falling Into this decision making trap, we need to work hard to mentally set aside decisions that we’ve made in the past when we are making new decisions. This is also a great time to find others in the organization who were not involved in the previous decisions and ask for their views.
What All Of This Means For You
An important part of the job of being a CIO is to be able to quickly make the right decision, no matter how big the question is. It turns out that this can be harder to do than we might think: there are three decision making traps that CIOs often fall into.
The three decision making traps that CIOs often fall for include placing too much weight on the first information that they receive, trying to perpetuate the current status quo, and making decisions that justify our past decisions.
Being aware of these decision making traps will allow us to detect when we are starting to fall into them. CIOs Will Always be asked to make important decisions, we just need to make sure that we are able to make the best decisions possible.

Organ-Ized: All-Star Tribute to the Hammond… $6.99 Full title: Organ-Ized: All-Star Tribute to the Hammond B3 Organ.Includes liner notes by Pete Fallico.High Street/Windham Hill’s Organ-Ized is nothing less than a salute to the classic Hammond B3 organ by some of the preeminent mainstream practitioners of the instrument in the late ’90s. Surprises are hardly the modus operandi here — it’s all soul-jazz, performed with love but not a lot of risk. While this might not showcase the idiosyncrasies of the instrument, that’s fine, because this delivers exactly what most Hammond diehards want — funky grooves and licks from the likes of Joey DeFrancesco, John Medeski, Art Neville, Michael Omartian, Jimmy Smith, Reuben Wilson, and Mike Weaver, among others. Some cuts cook more than others, but there are no duff tracks here — only Jack McDuff. For organ-heads looking for a little more of what they love, this is not a bad sampler to sample. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine |

John Milton by Hammond, Paul Worden, Blair Edition , 0 $30.49 This volume offers a series of fresh explorations of the life, writing, and reputation of John Milton. The ten papers take us inside Milton’s verse and prose, into the context of the events and the intellectual debates within which they were written, and into the later worlds within which his reputation evolved and fluctuated. Key topics discussed include: his political beliefs and career; the characteristics of his poetry – especially Paradise Lost; the literary influences upon his verse; his perception of women; and the ways he has been seen since his death. John Milton: Life, Writing, Reputation will be essential reading not only for scholars and students of literature, but for all those interested in Milton’s work and reputation over the last four centuries. |

Mad Dogs and Scotsmen by Hammond, Gerald Edition , 0 $13.49 While in quarantine at Three Oaks Kennels, Jove, a charming male black Labrador, has earned a special place in John Cunningham’s heart. So when Jove’s owner comes to take his dog to America, John can’t help feeling a little sad. After leaving the office, they find to their horror that John’s car has vanished, along with Jove, his owner’s briefcase, and John’s shotgun…. John’s car has seen better days, so whoever stole it must have been after its contents. But who would want to kidnap Jove? And what was in the briefcase that made its owner so jumpy? In trouble with the authorities for losing both a dog in quarantine and a shotgun, Cunningham finds himself embroiled in the police inquiries – inquiries that quickly become a murder case when a woman’s battered body is found near a burnt-out car. |

Motivating Factors – Andrew Carnegie – Motivated Marketers
There are numerous reasons attributing to Andrew Carnegie’s rapid rise to wealth. Some historians impute that Carnegie was ruthless and greedy allowing him to accumulate a vast amount of wealth. Implications are that he epitomized Charles Darwin’s example of the “fittest;” that is, only the strong survive and those who are weak fall prey to better-fit, stronger contestants in life. On the other hand, Carnegie suffered through poverty and starvation early in his life. This condition may have motivated Carnegie to do the best he could in order to avoid experiencing these hardships, again.
Later in Carnegie’s life he stated there was another motivating factor for him acquiring as much wealth as possible; his memory of how he witnessed his father and family go from a somewhat upper-middle class existence in Scotland to unemployment, poverty, and hunger. Many People Who experience homelessness and hunger have a tendency to try to avoid it as much as possible. Personally, I believe Carnegie did not want to suffer through that experience again and did all he could to protect himself and his family from such hardships.Andrew Carnegie 1835 – 1919
One must also consider education as playing an important role in attaining wealth. Though Andrew Carnegie did not have formal schooling, he did learn a great deal from his uncle and personal tutor, George Lander. Lander did not focus his teaching on academics such as mathematics and science; he concentrated his tutoring on the Arts. More importantly, Lander brought to young Carnegie’s attention the makings of great men like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. I tend to think that studying How Great people acquire greatness provides direction and inspiration to those who are curious and interested.
Carnegie was fortunate to experience some luck in his life. He was a hard worker and focused his attention on achieving a goal. He conceived ideas, believed he could make them happen, and persistently worked to accomplish his intentions. He excelled in each occupation he assumed. For instance, he became the best telegrapher in Pittsburgh, teaching himself Morse code to the point where hearing the clicking of the telegraph was all he needed to decipher a message. This is an example of how education and hard work helped to make him transcend others. However, as in the case with his investments, even though many people lost fortunes in the stock market, he was lucky enough to pick some stocks that made him a fortune. He also had the opportunity to work for a growing, prosperous company, the Pennsylvania Railroad. Being at the Right Place at the Right Time can be advantageous if one is aware of the opportunity and takes advantage of it through hard work, creativity, persistence, education, and the proper attitude.
Andrew Carnegie made enormous strides toward philanthropic endeavors. He gave vast amounts of money to charity, foundations, libraries, universities, churches, and education. His reasoning behind his philanthropic ventures is questionable. Did he make enormous contributions in an attempt to benefit the public, or was he striving to prolong his legacy and entrust His Name in history? Maybe he gave away ninety-percent of his wealth before his death in 1919 for selfish reasons—maybe, he did not want to disgrace himself. We may never know the truth.Carnegie-Hall
Andrew Carnegie was one of the wealthiest individuals in the world. He made fortunes playing the stock market, was innovative, creative, and an astute businessperson. How he amassed a huge fortune draws attention to him. Other aspects of his life expose him as a very successful individual. The mere act of his enormous philanthropic undertakings shines a spotlight on him to This Day. Many famous and upcoming performers long to have center stage at New York’s Carnegie Hall.
Finally, during his retirement, Andrew Carnegie established the Carnegie Hero Fund in recognition of heroism in the United States, Canada, and most European countries. In the education community, the Carnegie Award for Excellence in Teaching awards qualifying recipients. He subsidized Booker T. Washington’s efforts in education Afro-Americans at the Tuskegee Institute. He collaborated with Napoleon Hill in writing a book, “Think and Grow Rich.” based on interviews of hundreds of wealthy individuals on how to become successful. The book sold over 30 million copies; it is a guide and blueprint for those looking for success, today. The list of Andrew Carnegie’s achievements, ideals, failures, and successes is quite long. He is an interesting person to study. Looking at his economic and philosophic perspective in his later years, I find I would like to emulate.

1 and 2 Chronicles by Hill, Andrew E. Edition ILL, 0 $27.99 The Chronicles are more than a history of ancient Israel under the ascent and rule of the Davidic dynasty. They are a story whose grand theme is hope. Great battles are fought, heroes and tyrants vie for power, Israel splits into rival kingdoms, and the soul of God's holy nation oscillates between faithlessness and revival. Yet above this tossing sea of human events, God's covenant promises reign untroubled and supreme. First and Second Chronicles are a narrative steeped in the best and worst of the human heart—but they are also a revelation of Yahweh at work, forwarding his purposes in the midst of fallible people. God has a plan to which he is committed. Today, as then, God redirects our vision from our circumstances in this turbulent world to the surety of his kingdom, and to himself as our source of confidence and peace. Exploring the links between the Bible and our own times, Andrew E. Hill shares perspectives on 1 and 2 Chronicles that reveal ageless truths for our twenty-first-century lives. Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from our world to the world of the Bible. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. They focus on the original meaning of the passage but don't discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable—but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps bring both halves of the interpretive task together. This unique, award-winning series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into our postmodern context. It explains not only what the Bible meant but also how it speaks powerfully today. |

Fossils in the Making by Behrensmeyer, Anna K.; Hill, Andrew P. Edition , 2 $30.49 One of the first interdisciplinary discussions of taphonomy (the study of how fossil assemblages are formed) and paleoecology (the reconstruction of ancient ecosystems), this volume helped establish these relatively new disciplines. It was originally published as part of the influential Prehistoric Archeology and Ecology series.
