30 Seconds to Mars Virgin Records lawsuit and This Is War YourTicketMaket

30 Seconds To Mars Tickets On August 8, 2007, Kerrang! announced that 30 Seconds to Mars has been nominated for two categories of the Kerrang! Awards 2007; “Best International Newcomer” and “Best Single” – “The Kill”. On August 24 they had only won the award for Best Single, which was “The Kill”. The other award was lost to Madina Lake.

On November 1, 2007, the band won the MTV Europe Music Award for “Rock Out”, one of the two categories they were nominated in.

On December 21, 2007, 30 Seconds to Mars won Fuse’s Best of 2007 Award. They won in competition against Korn and had amassed over 7 million votes. 31 other bands and artists such as Muse, Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance and Avenged Sevenfold were also included in the contest.On August 2, 2008, 30 Seconds to Mars won the “Video Star” awards for “A Beautiful Lie” Music Video at MTV Asia Awards 2008, in Genting, Malaysia.

On August 21, 2008, 30 Seconds To Mars won two of the four Kerrang! Awards that they were nominated for. The band won “Best International Band” and “Best Single — From Yesterday”.On October 16, 2008 they won “Best International Rock Artist” at the Los Premios MTV Latinoamérica 2008.

On November 6, 2008, they were the VIP section hosts of the MTV Europe Music Awards, interviewing the likes of Kid Rock, Anastacia and Sugababes. They added to their collection with an MTV EMA “Video Star” for “A Beautiful Lie” and the “Rock Out” award, claiming that nearly all of their success is down to their fans.

Following other commitments, they will begin working on their third album. As heard in the MTV Malaysia interview with Leto, he announces they are currently in the middle of the new album. Some of the songs seem to Have Been performed at their overseas tour.

However, in August 2008, Virgin Records filed a $30 million lawsuit, claiming the band refused to deliver three albums as required by its contract. According to the lawsuit, the band “repudiated” a 1999 contract in July. In an early 2009 interview with MTV, Jared said that they hope to have their third album out by summer 2009, and he also gave information about the meaning behind the record saying, “I think this record is about faith, about spiritual matters, and that just happens to be what we’re thinking about and talking about in Our Lives right now. I said when the last album came out that I wanted to destroy the first record, which I think we did. We took a dramatic turn from the first to the second, and I think this new record follows that path. It’s exciting to us, and we’re really passionate about it.”

In the February 11 issue of Kerrang! magazine, the working title for the new album is said to be This Is War

Jared released a bit of information about his trip to Hawaii, and recorded a song called “Hurricane” with Kanye West.

On April 28, they returned from EMI and the lawsuit was annulled.

Soon after the announcement of the lawsuit settlement, Jared and 30 Seconds To Mars told MTV News that their third album has had its release date pushed Back From April 2009 to some time in September 2009. Although these dates have been changed many times, 30 Seconds to Mars has released This Is War on December 8, 2009.

Serenity and Inner Peace: Humility, Cooperation, Control, Time

 

HUMILITY

“There is no limit to what can be done if it doesn’t matter who gets the credit” (Ralph Waldo Emerson).   Humility doesn’t call attention to itself; it’s the “quiet virtue”. Although humility is often considered simply a sense of unworthiness and holding oneself in low regard, Tangney (2005) suggests that the following are key elements of true humility:

• Accurate assessment of one’s abilities and achievements
• Ability to acknowledge one’s mistakes, imperfections and limitations
• Openness to new ideas and advice
• Keeping one’s abilities and accomplishments in perspective (“I’m one individual within a larger scheme of things”)
• Relatively low self-focus
• Appreciation of the value of All Things, and awareness of different ways that people contribute

After discussing difficulties inherent to the assessment of humility, Tangney discusses related research, much of which focuses on related issues (“modesty”, absence of narcissism, being oriented to others, etc.).  Finally, she reports results of an unpublished study indicating a link between humility and forgiveness.

Several years ago, a neighbor was organizing a fund-raiser for an 11-year old girl who was recently discovered to have cancer.  The neighbor knew that I made balloon animals, and asked me to make some for the event.   We made roughly 200 balloon animals that evening (with a Little Help from my friends and a balloon pump), and had a wonderful time interacting with all the kids and my friends.  One woman asked if I was a professional clown (well, maybe) because I was pretty good at it.  However, another middle-aged woman confronted me with the statement that I should be ashamed of myself, and surely could find more meaningful things to do with my life than making balloon animals and acting like a clown.  I was at first tempted to summarize what I did with the “rest of my life” (full professor of psychology, associate dean of the local UW campus, member of the local school board and Police and Fire Commission, etc.), but I decided to let it go and laughed her off with a shrug.  “You see, ya can’t please everyone, so ya got to please yourself“ (Ricky Nelson, Garden Party).  Some People Like to stick their noses in your business (where it doesn’t belong), and it’s usually not worth it to try to correct or educate them, or to even waste the time worrying about it.  As another example, folks in recovery from alcoholism sometimes like to tell others how they ought to go about their recovery, and my favorite rebuttal in those cases is “work your own program“.  In addition, no one is perfect (not even me), and one is destined to depression if one tries to be.  You Can‘t please everyone.  If one does poorly in something, it doesn’t mean one will do so in everything.  Time to dust yourself off and “try/try again”.  Further, with maturity we develop internal standards about what is right and what is wrong, and don’t need to rely on others as much for those standards.

Cooperate rather than compete

A fairly impressive assortment of studies since the 1970s indicate that competitive activities promote a virulent spiral of increasing competition and antisocial behaviors, whereas participation in cooperative activities leads to a benign spiral of increasing cooperation and prosocial behavior.   The old “catharsis” theory (participation in friendly competitive activity allows us to drain off accumulating aggressive energy) is no longer really widely supported. The same research also indicates that white, American, male, urban, middle class, slightly older children are more competitive than any other children studied, even when it’s not in their best interests (that is, turning off the competitiveness would maximize their gains, but they compete anyway).  It would be interesting to replicate some of these studies today to determine if changes in society have reversed these gender differences (that is, have younger females caught up with or even surpassed males concerning nonadaptive competitiveness?).   We are a competitive society, and this is not Floody’s commie, pinko, leftist college professor lecture, but he will argue that participation in more cooperative activities might help to promote greater serenity and inner peace.  This is especially true of social comparison, as a variety of studies indicate that efforts to “keep up with my neighbors” tend not to promote a sense of well-being.  In addition, it obviously can lead to feelings of jealousy and envy.

There are more than 40 “peaceful”, nonviolent societies throughout the world (see Bonta, 1999), where violence and aggression are virtually unheard of (the Amish come to mind).  Research cutting across a number of disciplines indicates that these societies are nurturing and affiliative and that they emphasize cooperation and avoid competition.  Children are raised to be somewhat hesitant and fearful about the intentions of others (not taking peacefulness for granted), they lack competitive games, and they are made to feel no more important than others.  Individual achievement is devalued, as they feel that it leads to competition, aggression, and violence.  And they are very peaceful.

Control/Locus of Control

Rotter’s (1966) “locus of control” scale has possibly been used in more studies than any other psychological scale.  “Internal locus of control” involves the belief that whatever happens to me is the result of my own efforts and abilities.  “External locus of control”, on the other hand, involves the belief that whatever happens to me is the result of luck, chance, fate, or “being in the Right Place at the Right Time“.  Thompson (2005) discusses the role of personal control (that is, feeling in control of what happens to me) in adaptive functioning.  She reviews evidence indicating that perceived personal control is related to ability to manipulate the environment, problem solving, reduction of anxiety in the face of stress, and enhanced immune functioning.

There’s a huge literature concerning aggression and violence, but considerably less about “true evil” (for example, serial killers and genocide).  Students regularly ask me what motivates really evil behaviors (think about Ed Gein, Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Jack the Ripper, John Wayne Gacy, Hitler, Idi Amin, Castro).  Although the vast majority of humans indeed are not in this category, these horror stories do exist, and people can’t help but wonder about them.  Eric Fromm (1973) talked about “malignant aggression” (which includes sadism and necrophilia or intimate contact with the dead).  If one feels totally alone (isolated) in this world, and completely out of control over what happens to one, and certainly not appreciated for the fine individual that one thinks one really is, than one may begin to hurt others purely for the sake of hurting them.  In what better way might one prove one’s control and superiority over another person than by inflicting pain, mutilating, murdering, and indeed even consuming them and using their skin to construct lamp shades?  That’s a very brief synopsis of Fromm’s ideas, and a recurrent theme in the TV series “Criminal Minds”.

TIME MANAGEMENT

Time, and its efficient use, is obviously important to all of us.  There are many competing demands for Our Time, and we can’t get it all done without a steadfast commitment to efficiency.  Although there is relatively little related research, “time management” courses are very popular, especially in higher education.  Boniwell (2008) outlines the following “principles of time management”:

• Motivation is the first principle.  Make sure you enjoy What You are doing, and/or see it as worthwhile.  Seek congruence between Your Life goals and your activities.
• Seek a balance between work and other activities (washing dishes, playing, family, watching television, etc.), a balance that You Are comfortable with (recognizing that there are individual differences in this regard).
• Responsibility and achievement — schedule Your Time (I’m often surprised at the number of college students who don’t have appointment books or “to-do lists”), prioritize the Things You want to accomplish, and take time to recognize what you have accomplished or achieved (pat yourself on the back for a job well done, or have a bowl of Ice Cream).
• Work at reducing time anxiety and a sense of lack of control (see above).

Many of my college students want to manage their time better, and they find that focusing on these principles can be very helpful.

Procrastinationwould appear in key ways to be antithetical to some of the topics discussed in this chapter and elsewhere in this article, and it has been the topic of a fair amount of research.  Steel (2007), after some review and discussion of a number of studies, defines procrastination as “voluntary delaying an intended course of action despite being worse off for the delay”.  He also suggests that it is quite common, perhaps effecting 80%-95% of the college student population (and quite a few faculty members as well).  A number of my students acknowledge that procrastination is one of the biggest hurdles that they face, especially early in their college careers.  Following a review of 691correlations from a number of studies, Steel found that the best predictors of procrastination in the general population were:

• Task aversiveness (not liking what I have to do; some of the “best” procrastinators in my classes acknowledge that they’d really rather not be in school)
• Task delay (“I’ll do it after checking Facebook and after playing Grand Theft Auto for an hour or so”)
• Lack of self-efficacy (“I don’t think I can get it all done”)
• Impulsiveness (to easy to jump to Something Else, like studying a topic that I’m more interested in)
• Lack of conscientiousness (sense of responsibility and fussiness)
• Distractibility (too easy to be interrupted by something else)
• Lack of organization (don’t list and prioritize tasks, many of my students don’t even own appointment books)
• Limited achievement motivation (not having much of the intense desire to achieve and do well; favorite joke might be “What do they call a physician who graduates at the bottom of his or her class in medical school?”  Answer: “Doctor”)

Students in a psychological testing class at Viterbo created a number of statements that reflected Steels’ seven characteristics.  Several statements were then selected by group consensus, as well as several demographic characteristics that students were interested in studying as they might be related to procrastination.  Subsequent psychometric analysis revealed that five factors best represented the data (accounted for respectable percentage of variation, acceptable factor loadings).   The twenty items that represent the five factors of the procrastination scale and a review of current findings are available on my web site.

Told in flashback as Ricky Nelson (Gregory Calpakis) recounts his experiences to a worshiping fan in the last hours before the 1985 air crash that would take his life, the story begins around 1952, as the adolescent Ricky is recruited by his bandleader-producer father Ozzie Nelson (Jamey Sheridan) to play “himself” on the movie and TV version of the popular radio series The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Anxious to crawl out from under the shadow of his dictatorial father Ozzie, his vocalist mom Harriet (Sara Botsford) and his marginally more talented older brother David (Anthony Lemke), the 16-year-old Ricky begs for a chance to sing on the family’s series. The wildly enthusiastic audience response to Ricky’s warblings prompt Ozzie to aggressive promote Ricky’s musical career, but ultimately Ricky breaks loose from the family’s influence to strike out on his own. Alas, after several years at the top, Ricky’s career and fan following plummets, before he has reached his 30th birthday he is grasping at straws by performing at county fairs and trade shows. Making matters worse is his unhappy marriage to Kris Harmon (depicted as something of a conniving opportunist by Anne Openshaw) and his ever-increasing dependence upon drugs. While I don’t know if I think that statement, one thing is for sure; Heavy Metal will seldom die.The Ozzfest tour skipped 2008 and 2009 entirely, so that Ozzy Osbourne could work on his new Album Set for release in 2009 but it was delayed till June 2010, when it finally made it to the top 10 in four countries, including #4 in USA. Back in 1996 Ozzfest when was created, I don’t think Sharon or Ozzy Osbourne had any idea what it would amount to. I mean, the whole reason for Ozzfest to start with was because Lollapalooza organizers wouldn’t Let Them play (Lollapalooza by the way is in a Little Bit of trouble), back then however, there was no stage according to Rob Halford, it was heavy metal on the dirt. While the huge majority of people at the venue were guys in 1990′s faded band Ed hardy T-shirt, there were a lot of other people there also. Ozzy Osbourne together with his recent hit album, and performing alongside the legendary Motley Crue : now that’s Sounds Like s recipe for success.The estimates for the days show was in the 100,000′s, and though they can’t confirm or deny that number, I can promise you this, it positive looked like it. Any which Way You turned You Could see a relatives with a infant boy in his stroller frontin a green Mohawk, or a girl and her grandpa wearing an Ozzfest shirt, to girls in their swim suit tops and guys in leather biker-club jackets. It wasn’t all fun though, well, yes it was – but not for everybody. With a few fights breaking out – with smaller fights quickly growing to include 5 or more people that weren’t even involved with the original tussle.The side stage, sponsored by Monster Energy had a brutal mosh pit towards the finish of the afternoon, sometimes, it began to be an very scary spot to be around. Even the tougher guys were coming out of the mosh pit with black eyes and holding their stomach very unable to walk. Part of it was due to bands like Exodus , Drowning Pool , and naturally Black Label Society that demanded larger, faster, and harder circle pits as the afternoon went on. At two times when I was in the very back next to the porta potties, Drowning Pool front man Ryan McCombs demanded everybody scream – and those even doing their business were screaming.When the main stage started there was a little bit of an overlap because the side stage was still going and I don’t think lots of people realized that local band, Nonpoint, was killing it; but only to a little crowd. It’s hard for someone to compete with Black Label Society though, whom was finishing up on the side stage. By the time Devil Driver c ame out people were slowly beginning to Come Over from the side stage and hardcore fans were standing up in their seats screaming lyrics and sometimes, guys were screaming there love to the band. The bands hard hittin in your face got the last circle pit of the night going, a huge but empty pit in the orchestra area. At this point a security guard pointed out to me a huge disclaimer in his paperwork, That You ought to enter the orchestra area at your own risk. I don’t think there was much of an issue with the pit itself, but possibly the drunk girl that puked All Over the pit floor before getting escorted out. Sadly, nobody noticed and everybody was stepping all over it, not so surprising for such a rough and tumble crowd. When Judas Priest, er, Halford I mean took the stage, it wasn’t the First Time they was on stage with Ozzy. In fact, this superstar has replaced Ozzy on over One Live Black Sabbath concert. Today however wasn’t one of those days. Halford came out for himself and while the crowd desired to eat it up, it was a bit hard as the tone set earlier by the hard hitting in your face music was killed by a lacking and dull performance by the man One Time long ago people thought about the “Metal God”.Motley Crue however had absolutely no issue waking up the now very sleeping crowd. Basically, the best performance of the night and possibly one of the most entertaining concerts I Have Been to in a very long time. Immediately, when they came out with “Kick Start My Heart” with Vince Neil jogging from side to side stage not missing a beat, people around me started getting up for the first time since before Halford. The stage was filled with stunning red lights shining onto the Motley Crue logo on a backdrop of skyscrapers which would be lit with fire throughout the night. The whole stage performance was very thrilling – complete with fireworks throughout the hour long set and not one missed beat from the classic rockers.”Wildside” was played with green fireworks that lit the stage like a 4th of July parade. The set continued with “Shout At The Devil,” with everybody singing along to the chorus proving that Motley Crue Could Have basically filled the amphitheater by themselves. The man next to me, Mike, possibly the largest Motley Crue fan in southern California having paid $500 for his SEAT from a ticket broker told me that playing, “Ten Seconds to Love”, was definitely a treat from Motley Crue to their fans. The set ended with classic “Girls, Girls, Girls”.Even though, Ozzy Osbourne appeared a bit slow sometimes, they shined throughout the night. Having a four year break, Ed hardy jeans they came out with guns blazing. Most Can Only require to have as much energy as the now 61 year elderly that is building more fans 40 years in to his career then back in the lovely Ol’ Black Sabbath days. Ozzy Osbourne was leaping and jogging around the stage all night greeting fans and even spraying them with a huge water canon front middle of the stage!A lot of his new fan base can be attributed to his reality tv shows, but today wasn’t about Ozzy, “the reality man.” Even their newer songs like “Saints of Los Angeles” got a crowd reaction, possibly proving that I was the one that hadn’t heard the song before.Though a few people would have loved for them to keep up with the hard rocking pace they started, when Tommy Lee got on a Grand Piano and they started doing “Home Sweet Home”, that was basically a highlight of the night for most.Motley Crue’s set list includ ed more of their greatest hits like “Dr. Feelgood” and “Motherfucker Of The Year” – which had everybody with both middle fingers in the air (for a second I thought I was at a Pennywise concert), and “Same Ol’ Situation”. If Ozzy Osbourne didn’t play Black Sabbath covers it wouldn’t be an “Ozzy” concert after all – with songs like “Fairies Wear Boots”, and “Paranoid” – four huge Sabbath hits included in the setlist of Ozzy songs to keep things excited.In the middle of the set, a crazy guitar and drum solo to spice things up before continuing with “Iron Man”, another Black Sabbath cover.To finish off historic night, and some 13 song or so setlist, “Crazy Train.”Till next time It was about the Prince of Darkness.Before the show, a very entertaining video of Ozzy Osbourne superimposed onto videos of popular tv shows and films, like Ozzy wearing a red Ed hardy clothes in a scene of Jersey Shore, my personal favourite, the desert scene in the film Hangover, Ozzy in a Lady Gaga video, and even Iron Man and Avatar! Then the screen had a huge statement, “Let the Insanity Start!” to start the set with band already on stage.Ozzy’s set opened with classics like “Bark at the Moon” before going to “Let Me Listen to You Scream” from his new album, “Scream”.
